EMF Risk Assessments for Employees “At-Risk” to EMFs

Certain Employees & individuals are much more susceptible to the effects of EMF exposure ie:

  • those wearing Electronic Medical Implants either inside the body (such as pacemakers, defibrillators etc), or outside the body (such as insulin pumps, hearing aids etc) – EMFs can readily interfere with their operation even at relatively low levels
  • those wearing non-Electronic Medical Implants such as metal plates, metal joints, metal pins etc
  • expectant mothers, in respect to the developing embryo

EMF Risk Assessments for Employees “At-Risk” to EMFs

In-order to protect any Employees at particular risk to EMFs (see below), the CEMFAW Regs 2016 states “a Personal EMF Risk Assessment must be undertaken for any identified At-Risk

Employees based on:

  • the equipment used, and
  • the areas accessed by that Employee

….on a typical working day / shift”.

Whilst this may sound very daunting & a potential minefield to many Employers, particularly large organisations, in actual fact such Personal EMF RA’s are usually quite straightforward*.

Any such Employees are therefore classed as “At-Risk” under the CEMFAW Regs 2016, and crucially their EMF exposure threshold levels are thus set much lower than for those not At-Risk, typically 10x lower (for all ubiquitous 50 Hertz UK mains powered equipment)

Scholes EMF Ltd specialise in such Personal EMF Risk Assessments by:

  • assessing what equipment is used / areas are accessed by an At-Risk Employee
  • taking EMF measurements where necessary…. with the correct EMF instrumentation (a very common mistake!)
  • crucially, taking “safe” distance measurements from the offending equipment in cm to be below the At-Risk Limits
  • compiling a full Personal EMF Risk Assessment matrix in the Report of any At-Risk Employees with Actions required to ensure their safety / safe return to work, including prohibiting the use of equipment where necessary
  • Affixing the correct EMF “pacemaker” type warning sticker onto any equipment found to exceed the At-Risk Limits. This ensures anyone At-Risk can quickly spot any such equipment on approach, and keep distance
  • Actions & guidance on how to identify any At-Risk Employees both currently & going forward

We ensure both the EMF safety of any At-Risk Employee and your compliance with the CEMFAW Regs in-relation to this.

Furthermore, all Companies have a “duty-of-care” to protect any At-Risk Contractors or At-Risk Visitors to site. These individuals, and any offending equipment, are also fully covered as part of your EMF Assessment & ensuing Report in a straightforward & easy-to-understand manner.

*For example, for any At-Risk Employees wearing metal implants in typical industrial applications, the only things which could potentially have effects are EMFs from exceptionally strong static “natural” magnets, or strong electromagnets. And even then only if the actual metal implant is ferromagnetic ie) attracted to magnets, and at close distance.

However, for At-Risk Employees wearing electronic medical implants, the potential EMF interference exposure risks from electrical equipment they use could have much more serious consequences on their health. Therefore, their Personal EMF Risk Assessment is often more in-depth usually requiring EMF measurements to ensure the “At-Risk” thresholds are not breached
